Neuralink is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas. For the past few years, it has been testing on animals while waiting for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to permit it to start human studies.
“We want to be very careful and sure that it will work well before we put a device into a person,” Musk said Wednesday during a much-anticipated public update on the device.
“At first, the progress, especially when it comes to people, may seem agonizingly slow, but we are doing everything simultaneously to bring it to scale,” he said. So, progress should be faster than it is now.
Musk said that the first two ways the Neuralink device will help people will be to help people who can’t see and help people who can’t move their muscles.
“Even if someone has never seen anything in their whole life, like if they were born blind, we still think we can give them sight,” he said.

Big Plans That Are Behind Schedule

In July, Synchron implanted its device in a patient in the United States for the first time. This was a big step forward for the company, which had already done tests on four people in Australia.
